The Health seminar is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, November 5.

Breast in Show: Caring For Our Often Forgotten Heroines

Serena Craft, DVM, DACVP

Buried deep on the underside, hidden behind a sheet of beautiful flowing hair lie the often unsung and forgotten heroines of our Beardies, their mammary glands or BOOBs (Breasts Of Our Beardies). The BOOBs do get their glory days of attention when they are providing vital care and specialized nutrition for our next generation of Beardies, and they will often get a little love when our girls are enjoying a relaxing belly rub. However, it is not surprising then that it’s easy to forget what is hidden behind so much hair, and sometimes not so pleasant things can grow in shadows.

This seminar will focus on a complete approach to mammary health from prevention, screening, diagnosing, and treatment. Most seminars focus on diagnosing and treatment, but did you know that the rates and types of mammary cancer in dogs parallel that of humans? So much that dog mammary cancer is often used as a model for humans? Yet despite the increased incidence of mammary tumors in our bitches, almost no attention is dedicated to teaching people on how to do preventative examinations. Therefore extra attention during this seminar will be spent on prevention, including how to do a thorough mammary exam, what and where important mammary lymph nodes are located, where most tumors arise in our Beardies, and busting myths and providing facts on tumor size and diagnosis.
